Call of Duty 2025 will reportedly be a direct sequel to Black Ops 2
Activision is making big changes after the disappointing launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – the recently released remake, not the original – has been considered by many as a disappointment given the issues with the single-player campaign and multiplayer. While the title is still selling well, Activision Blizzard is already planning a major shake-up of the franchise, much as a sequel could be a shake-up.
According to a new report by Insider Gaming‘s Tom Henderson, Call of Duty 2025 will be making some “really big changes”. Henderson says that the upcoming title will be a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and feature some futuristic tech. We may even see the return of the controversial jetpack movement system…
Hmm, well, none of these are “really big changes” since Call of Duty has already done all of this, but at least its different from the past couple of years. Ish? We certainly don’t expect the least creative, popular AAA IP to reinvent the wheel, but at least we’re seeing a course correction.
Call of Duty 2025 will also reportedly feature a mix of remastered Black Ops 2 maps and new maps. This is similar to how Modern Warfare 3 incorporated fan-favorite maps from the 2009 edition into the current game alongside originals based on the current battle royale map of Urzikstan. The Black Ops 2 remastered maps will be launched with the new maps.

A source within the company revealed that the change is likely a response to the widespread criticism that called Modern Warfare 3 just a glorified DLC of its predecessor. The game does somehow feel like a DLC with Zombies being adapted from DMZ and the presence of MW2 maps and guns. Many feel that the carryover system just padded the new game with old content.
Call of Duty 2025 will reportedly revamp the movement system once again. The upcoming game will also feature the return of the classic “Create-A-Class” from Black Ops 2, gunfight, and round-based zombies. It is however unclear if Activision will implement a carryover system for Call of Duty 2024, which is reportedly called Black Ops Gulf War.

It is a good sign that Activision Blizzard is already looking at the 2025 title as early as this year. Modern Warfare 3 only had 16 months of development time after the Activision Blizzard execs decided that they wanted to release a full game instead of a DLC. We assume that Sledgehammer Games was under a lot of pressure to deliver a title in such a short window.
Despite the criticisms, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 can still be considered a success given its sales numbers. Infinity Ward will be continuing the series, because of course, and is reportedly already working on the next Modern Warfare installment.
It will be interesting to see what other changes Activision Blizzard will introduce with for Call of Duty 2025. One thing we do hope will be coming is a longer campaign.
