From indie titles to triple-A big-budget games to PS5 exclusives, there are so many great options from every genre that came out this year. We’ve added some new titles and replaced some old ones. These are the games you need to play and get off of your backlog as we move into 2024.

Fun for all ages, Lego Fortnite has taken Fortnite to a whole new level with this intricate mashup. You’ll have more fun than you can imagine, playing through a Minecraft-style version of Lego but with Fortnite at its center. It’s an amalgamation of the best of what makes these franchises popular, and even better, you can play it with the smaller ones in your family as well. From building a base to crafting and everything in between, have some family fun with Lego Fortnite.

Dethroning Diablo 4 as our best live-service title, The Finals is the new first-person shooter with a unique premise. Coordinate with your teammates as you take on opposing enemy teams in a high-energy competition in a future that’s obsessed with reality TV. Interactive environments, destructible buildings, and fast, feels-good traversal make a unique experience on a smaller scale than most other current shooters.

Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and other cozy game players will fall in love with what Disney Dremalight Valley has to offer. Bring familiar gameplay of building your town, befriending the villagers, helping them on their quests, and add your Disney dream of living with some of your favorite and iconic Disney characters. From Remy’s shop to Merlin’s quests, you’ll be able to sit back and relax while making your town beautiful and helping classic Disney characters. The latest expansion offers even more to do now as well.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is one of those perfect bite-sized in-between games to play while you can’t quite get into your longer titles and don’t want to suffer through dailies on your other ones. With the action combat making a return and a smaller map that still feels justifiably sizeable, you can get a great story and entry in the Yakuza series with Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

As mentioned by Features Editor Andrew King in his review, Sea of Stars is a throwback RPG that’s a “terrific modern riff on SNES classics.” It’ll make you remember why you fell in love with titles such as Chrono Trigger back in the day, and you’ll marvel at what the full game has to offer. With dungeons reminiscent of 2D Zelda classic titles and deep dynamic combat, you’ll transport yourself to the SNES era as you sail through Sea of Stars.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 presents a truly engaging story, the likes of which you probably haven’t played before in a superhero video game. From looking gorgeous on the PS5, to playing smoothly and utilizing the adaptive triggers on the Dualsense, you’ll truly feel like Spider-Man as you immerse yourself in what Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has to offer.

Alan Wake 2 is one of the best survival horror games in a long time. With excellent heroes to root for, you can play as both Alan Wake and Saga Anderson. You can eventually switch between the two protagonists and explore both realities. Excellent puzzles, an engaging story, and fun plays in different genres; you’ll miss out if you don’t play Alan Wake 2, especially since it’s a Game of the Year nominee.

Finally available on PS5, Scorn is a must-play if you enjoy Lovecraftian horror. You’ll get lost in its dystopian atmosphere as you try to navigate your way through puzzles and make your way to the end. If you like games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, then you’ll fall right into what Scorn has to offer. It’s provocative, unpredictable, and, despite a few issues, worth giving a try.

If you’re looking for a frenetic platformer with fun combat and interesting parkour, you should give Ghostrunner 2 a try. It’s about a ten-hour game, so it’s quick enough to fit into your gaming rotation and continue playing some of the other great games that launched this year. The game even has a roguelite mode called Roguerunner.exe, allowing you to just take some fun parkour and combat challenges in a single run, providing even more gameplay incentives.

You’ll not find a game quite like Baldur’s Gate 3. The surprise hit taking gaming by storm, a possible contender for game of the year, and just an all-around massive RPG adventure, Baldur’s Gate 3 proves you might actually be interested in a genre you’ve never tried. Currently exclusive on the PlayStation 5 for next-gen consoles, there’s only one place to play this massive, sprawling adventure, where player choice and consequences make you feel like you’re making a difference. You’ll love every minute of it. If you’ve played the Divinity series, you’ll be familiar with the combat. If you’ve played Dungeons & Dragons, the spells, attacks, and even the setting will ring some bells.

Of course, you can’t have a list of the best PS5 games without including one of the biggest exclusive launches on the PlayStation 5 this year. Final Fantasy 16 proves the series has much more to offer, especially on next-generation hardware. Follow Clive, Jill, and a host of other party members as they traverse across a world in political turmoil, where backstabbing and war are commonplace, and the average person is lucky to be alive as giant-sized summons wage brutal warfare. As the first action RPG in the series, it takes the franchise to new heights.

With new characters coming and new mechanics, anyone interested in fighting games can’t miss the classic Street Fighter series. Street Fighter 6 brings the series back and better than ever. You’ll be able to do classic battles and arcade mode, join the battle hub for head-to-head online action, arcade-style, or even take part in the story mode added to the game. There’s even a new modern control scheme to help beginners get into the game. Meet classic characters in a new way, learn the ever-growing roster, and experience the thrill of landing a perfect parry when you play Street Fighter 6. Even without the famous name, EA Sports FC 24 is a great addition to the series lineup. Bring your football game to life with improvements across almost every facet from the previous entries. A ground-up remake of the Capcom classic, Resident Evil 4 Remake, sees Leon Kennedy attempt to rescue the President’s daughter from a dangerous cult. It offers new control schemes, an expanded story that delves deeper into the Resident Evil lore, and modernized graphics that change the way you see and experience this well-known story and game. Slight changes to the game only enhance it for older players and new audiences. Will you save the President’s daughter?

Multiple genres collide as Armored Core 6 is all at once an adventure, shooter, platformer, and fighting game. You’ll experience building your mech and going on missions for the first time, and that feeling can’t be replicated. This mecha-based game allows you to fight in what’s a heavily customizable mech unit, sometimes adjusting it mid-battle to help you gain an advantage.
