With Sony having a lean first-party release schedule in 2024, Ghost of Tsushima might just be the company’s most important IP.

PlayStation’s 2024 release schedule might be looking a little thin, and while there’s no chance that something like Ghost of Tsushima will launch this year, Sucker Punch’s spectacular samurai title may be carrying the company’s reputation and prestige for the time being. Essentially, although Sony won’t be releasing any first-party games within major franchises this year, Ghost of Tsushima has a bright future.
Sony’s CFO Hiroki Totoki caused a minor stir among PlayStation fans when he announced that the company wouldn’t be releasing any first-party exclusives for major franchises like God of War and Spider-Man 2 during the 2024 fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025. Totoki’s comments mean that titles like the rumored God of War half-sequel and Marvel’s Wolverine, which could have conceivably been released either this year or early next year, are off the table and still over a year away, at least. His statement also puts the nail in the coffin for slightly less realistic, but not impossible, launches, such as Ghost of Tsushima 2. But Ghost of Tsushima still has a lot going on.
Ghost of Tsushima Could Be Sony’s Biggest Property Right Now
Ghost of Tsushima’s PC Port
Ghost of Tsushima is coming to PC, which will make it the next major first-party PlayStation game to be made available on the platform. The Director’s Cut version of the game will be landing on Windows on May 16, complete with all the hallmarks and benefits of PC gaming, including uncapped frame rates and ultrawide support. This news, though not completely unheralded, comes as a welcome surprise for those who missed out on the game, and will no doubt increase the reach of the Ghost of Tsushima brand over time.
Ghost of Tsushima 2 Could Be Revealed This Year
Some of the same sources that provided accurate leaks about Ghost of Tsushima‘s PC port, such as IconEra, have also asserted that the game’s sequel will be officially revealed this summer. It’s important to emphasize that this is only a rumor and not confirmed by Sony, but it’s not too outlandish, as the franchise is due for an update, and now would be the perfect time to deliver.
It’s been nearly four years since the release of the first game, which swept PlayStation fans away and wound up becoming the fastest-selling new IP on the PS4. Given its booming success, a sequel that builds off the first Ghost of Tsushima seems like an inevitability and a surefire success for Sony and Sucker Punch. 2024 would be a reasonable time to confirm a sequel’s development, and Sony could also capitalize on the game’s revitalized popularity following the PC port.
The Ghost of Tsushima Movie
It’s also worth mentioning the Ghost of Tsushima movie, spearheaded by John Wick Director Chad Stahelski. The movie seems to be fairly early in development, with casting not yet starting as of November 2023. However, Stahelski seems enthusiastic about the Ghost of Tsushima adaptation, and it’s not unlikely that more news about the IP’s silver screen debut will come out over the next few months.
With a PC adaptation coming this spring, a reveal of the sequel rumored for the summer, a movie in the works, and no major PlayStation releases within major franchises til next April, Ghost of Tsushima may be Sony’s most promising and important property at the moment. If Sony throws its full weight behind the IP, it could wind up being another Last of Us, Uncharted, or God of War: a system-selling, flagship series.
