Destiny 2: How To Unlock The Superblack Shader
The fan-favorite Superblack shader from the original Destiny is back. Claim both containment keys to get your hands on this shader.

Destiny 2‘s Into the Light update has brought back a fan-favorite shader from the original Destiny: Superblack. This shader gives your weapons and armor a jet-black appearance with no additional colors. Emissive materials will glow white, but everything else is colored black, making this the perfect shader if you’re using multiple armor pieces with misaligned color channels.
But as with all shaders, you’ll need to unlock Superblack first before you can use it, and doing so is more difficult than one might expect. This short guide will detail how you can get your hands on the Superblack shader in Destiny 2: Into the Light.
Note:
The Superblack shader will be temporarily unobtainable once The Final Shape launches. Be sure to unlock it before the expansion launches. It’s unknown when the shader will return.
How To Unlock The Superblack Shader

The Superblack Shader is locked away in a containment field within the Hall of Champions. To open it, you must obtain a Superblack Containment Key from Lord Shaxx and Arcite 99-40. Their keys are unlocked upon completing two different tasks:
- Superblack Key Alpha (Shaxx): Reach Rank 17 with Lord Shaxx in the Onslaught playlist.
- Superblack Key Omega (Arcite): Complete every Brave weapon quest.
Superblack Key Alpha

Lord Shaxx’s key may only be earned by earning a total of 10,000 Hype, the reputation system tied to Onslaught. You can increase your Hype by completing Onslaught waves, bonus objectives, Shaxx’s Onslaught bounties, Arcite’s weekly bounties, and Brave weapon quests. We cover the exact reputation values in our Onslaught Hype guide.
The fastest way to increase your Hype with Shaxx is by completing Brave weapon quests and bounties. Bounties serve as your main source of Hype reputation, with Arcite providing the most Hype progress if you can complete all of their weekly bounties.
Superblack Key Omega

Arcite’s key requires you to complete all 12 Brave arsenal quests. None of these quests are time-gated, so you can complete all 12 in a single play session if you’re efficient. All required quests are listed below.
Weapon | Quest |
---|---|
Blast Furnace | Blast From The Past |
Edge Transit | Edgelord |
Elsie’s Rifle | Stranger Danger |
Falling Guillotine | Spin To Win |
Forbearance | Patience And Forbearance |
Hammerhead | Bring Down The Hammer |
Hung Jury SR4 | Jury Duty |
Luna’s Howl | Howl At The Moon |
Midnight Coup | Midnight Ride |
The Mountaintop | Climbing The Mountaintop |
The Recluse | Recluse Endangerment |
Succession | Right Of Succession |
Exact quest steps can be found in our Into the Light weapon guide. Once you’ve completed all 12 quests, be sure to return to Arcite to claim your key fragment.
Unlocking Superblack

Now that you have both keys, head to the containment chamber in the Hall of Champions. Interact with the terminal next to the containment field to gain access to the chamber. Walk next to the black mass floating in the chamber, interact with it, and you’ll unlock the Superblack Shader on your account. The shader may be used on both weapons and armor.
