Xbox Game Pass Is Getting A Highly Anticipated Horror Game On June 18

Games Gaming News Xbox Series

Still Wakes The Deep brings terror to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on June 18.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers looking to change it up in June are in luck because a horror game with an especially unique setting is set to arrive on the service in the middle of the month. There may already be plenty of terrifying games available on Game Pass, including modern hits like Amnesia: The Bunker and Bramble: The Mountain King, but thanks to Microsoft‘s handy Day One program, fans needn’t wait for some of the most highly anticipated releases. Subscribers will be able to quake with fear alongside everyone else who purchased the game on other platforms.

Per Pure XboxGame Pass subscribers with a taste for the macabre can look forward to the release of Still Wakes The Deep on June 18. Developed by the popular development studio The Chinese Room, the team behind some excellent narrative adventure games like Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and Everybody’s Gone to Rapture, its latest project places players onboard a massive oil rig in the dangerous North Sea. Of course, with such an isolated setting, it stands to reason that something goes terribly wrong and protagonist Caz McLeary is forced to fight a terrifying monster.

Still Wakes The Deep Looks Horrifying

Fancy A Bit Of Lovecraftian Terror?

While not explicitly marketed as a Lovecraftian story, the location of an abandoned oil rig in the middle of an icy sea does lend itself to such a genre. As Caz attempts to discover what caused the station to become cut off from the main base of operations, it becomes clear that there’s something distinctly inhuman prowling around the decks. The story is largely inspired by John Carpenter’s classic horror movie The Thing as well as Annihilation, Midsommar, and Suspiria.

When it comes to fighting off the monster that’s attempting to kill off the oil rig’s survivors, Caz’s options are limited but they’re certainly not useless. Navigating the world itself is perilous as the blistering storm outside makes simple traversing the scaffolding and decks dangerous while the more confined interiors feel like traps just waiting to be sprung. The Chinese Room has already proven itself as an excellent storyteller with a penchant for all things spooky, so it’s reasonable to suspect that Still Wakes The Deep will deliver the kind of experience fans have come to expect from the studio.

Xbox Game Pass is constantly adding new titles to its already extensive catalog but May has proven to be one of the service’s strongest months. With the launch of the highly anticipated Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2users can still look forward to the imminent release of hits like Moving Out 2 and Lords of the Fallen. Those alone should be enough to keep subscribers busy until Still Wakes The Deep drops.
