Doom: The Dark Ages Is Revamping Glory Kills For More Player Choice

Articles Games Gaming News Video

Back in May, when it had been rumored that the next Doom title would be “Medieval-Inspired,” there was some concern among fans about the reported setting. After all, Doom is known for big guns, futuristic tech and crazy demons. However, that concern was assuaged when Doom: The Dark Ages was revealed at Xbox’s Summer Game Fest showcase, and the series’ signature gameplay loop was shown, along with some hardcore tunes. Oh, and Doom Slayer had a cape.

If there were any lingering concerns about the game’s setting, then recent reveals from QuakeCon should clear things right up.

The Glory Kill System Has Been Revamped, Plus Three Melee Weapons

According to reporting from an attendee of QuakeCon that has been transcribed by an Xbox fan Twitter account, the iconic Glory Kill system has been overhauled to involve more player choice. The system is apparently moving away from scripted animations, as seen in Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, and instead will have players choosing how they want to finish an enemy off.

Elsewhere, weapons were also revealed, with a “double-barreled plasma gun” being a massive highlight. The nail gun also appears to be a major gameplay focus, as it can pin enemies to walls, according to the report. As far as melee weapons go, there will be three available to players, including a flail and mace, as well as the shield saw.

In particular, the shield saw will seemingly offer several gameplay elements. According to the attendee, it can push enemies back, it can be thrown and it can cut through foes. The mech that was revealed at the end of the initial announcement trailer was also reportedly showcased. It will have a massive gun, which is no surprise, and the Doom Slayer will be able to engage in hand-to-hand combat while in the suit.
