Marathon Infinity, part of Bungie’s classic Marathon trilogy, has been re-released on Steam for free by Bungie and Aleph One.

Bungie and Aleph One have re-released the third entry of the studio’s classic Marathon series for the first time in 28 years, Marathon Infinity, and it is available on Steam for absolutely free. While Bungie is mainly known for being the creator of the Halo and Destiny franchises, the studio got its start with Marathon. Bungie’s FPS trilogy started in 1994, with the first game being released for Apple Macintosh computers, competing alongside the likes of Doom and Wolfenstein.

Marathon is considered one of the trailblazers of the genre, as it helped establish a number of different mechanics that are considered conventional nowadays. While Marathon isn’t one of the most well-remembered games in Bungie’s library, due to its limited exclusivity on Mac computers, the series has been making a comeback in recent years. Bungie and Aleph One teamed up to re-release the original Marathon trilogy on Steam, with the first game being added earlier this May, followed by the second in July. The third title in the trilogy has been added to the Steam storefront, and like the prior two entries, is available for free.

The game was released on Steam as Classic Marathon Infinity, developed and published by Aleph One Developers, just like the prior two re-releases. Aleph One Developers is a fan-run team of developers who were working on bringing Bungie’s Marathon games to modern platforms. Similar to Aleph One’s Classic Marathon and Classic Marathon 2 Steam re-releaseClassic Marathon Infinity has been enhanced with a number of different gameplay tweaks to improve the experience.

With the release of Classic Marathon InfinityBungie’s classic Marathon trilogy has been re-released on Steam, with these versions being well-maintained definitive versions of the classic titles.

Outside these re-releases, the Marathon series is looking to make a comeback with a new game too. Bungie first announced the revival of Marathon at the 2023 PlayStation showcase, where it has been re-imagined as a multiplayer extraction shooter rather than a single-player game. The change in direction has seen mixed reactions towards the revival, with reported development troubles behind closed doors as well. For the time being, fans will need to wait until more information about Bungie’s Marathon revival is revealed.
