Activision confirmed that major changes will be made to Call of Duty: Warzone alongside the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on October 25. Call of Duty: Warzone will receive multiple sandbox changes, and Black Ops 6‘s omnidirectional movement system will be integrated into the popular battle royale game.
The Call of Duty Season 5 Reloaded mid-season update brought new weapons, game modes, operators, and more to Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone. Alongside the seasonal update, Activision implemented a major upgrade to the Call of Duty HQ app, which no longer requires Warzone as a mandatory download to play Modern Warfare 3. Major changes are expected for Warzone later this year as the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 approaches, and the Call of Duty NEXT event revealed exactly what will change this October.

On Twitter, CharlieIntel compiled a list of changes that will be made to Warzone with Black Ops 6′s launch, which was discussed during the Call of Duty NEXT livestream. The aforementioned omnidirectional movement system will be implemented in Warzone, and the backpack system will be removed entirely. Players will be able to use tactical sprints while holding a knife, ensuring players are more mobile directly after landing on the battlefield. In addition, Wildcards from Black Ops Cold War will be making a return in both Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Activision confirmed that “fluidity” updates will be made to Warzone, likely targeting gunplay and other aspects tied to movement. Modern Warfare 3’s Guardian and Mosquito Drone scorestreaks will be removed from Warzone as well to make way for Black Ops 6′s scorestreaks. Fortunately, Warzone players will retain access to their favorite weapons from Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 when Black Ops 6 launches.
Many Call of Duty fans appear to be conflicted about the upcoming Warzone changes on Twitter, with some pointing out the removal of backpacks as the most contentious change. On the other hand, some players believe these changes will make the battle royale game feel more like the original Warzone from 2020.
Several quality-of-life improvements will be made to Warzone in October, and player feedback will be vital for more changes in the first season and its Reloaded mid-season update. There’s still one more season for Modern Warfare 3 and the current iteration of Warzone before Black Ops 6 arrives, however. Season 5 Reloaded is expected to last until mid-September 2024, and Season 6 will begin around the same time as the final season for Modern Warfare 3.
