It appears that a new Terminator game is in the works, and it will be 2D.
While the Terminator movie franchise may not be setting the world on fire, the line of Terminator-based video games has been rather solid. Between the Terminator 3 movie tie-in game, Terminator: Dawn of Fate, the current-gen Terminator: Resistance and even characters in Mortal Kombat, there are some superb entries.
It would appear that lineage is set to continue. That is if information from a recent rating by the Australian Classification Board is to be believed. Additionally, it appears that the game will take a rather unique approach —2D.

I’ll Be Back On Console
As first spotted by Gematsu, the Australian Classification Board, Australia’s equivalent to the ESRB or PEGi, recently approved a new Terminator game titled, Terminator 2D: No Fate.
Naturally, the game will receive a Mature (M) rating due to violence and strong language. On that same page, the game has been classified for release on nearly every console, including PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC.
With respect to the developer, the game is being worked on and will be published by Reef Entertainment. Gamers may recall that Reef was partly responsible for bringing Terminator Resistance to life with Teyon serving as the developer. The UK-based team has mainly worked on the publishing side of things, though its About Us section notes specialization in QA and design, among other services.
Should things come to pass, a 2D Terminator game could be the shot in the arm the franchise needs. It wouldn’t be the first franchise to go backwards, with Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge all paying homage to the video games of day’s past. Ultimately, only time will tell what exactly No Fate ends up being, but it certainly has the makings, on paper at least, of something unique.
