Even if it didn’t win big at The Game Awards, Black Myth: Wukong was still one of the biggest games of 2024.

Black Myth: Wukong has finally won a Game of the Year award like its developers planned, with it managing to beat out BalatroWarhammer 40k: Space Marines 2, and Helldivers 2 for the Steam Awards’ Game of the Year.

2024 had its fair share of big surprises in the world of video games (just look at the runaway success of Balatro), but there’s one that stood out among the rest – Black Myth: Wukong. Announced all the way back in 2020, Wukong instantly caught a lot of attention and became highly-anticipated, but no one expected it to be the humongous hit that it was.

Despite some initial controversy and allegations of sexism made against GameScience, Black Myth: Wukong went on to hit far more than one million players on its launch day, with the numbers continuing to rise as it eventually got nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. While it ended up losing that race to Astro Bot (something the developers have commented on), it’s finally taken home a win.

Black Myth: Wukong Wins Steam Awards 2024’s Game Of The Year

Yesterday, Valve shared the final results for The Steam Awards 2024, which are decided by the community. Perhaps unsurprisingly considering the huge playerbase behind it, Black Myth: Wukong ended up taking the Game of the Year crown for the year, managing to beat out Stalker 2, Balatro, Helldivers 2, and Warhammer 40000: Space Marines 2.

Over on Twitter, the official account for Black Myth celebrated the win by expressing gratitude to every player who voted for the game, while extending congratulations to everyone else who was nominated or won an award. While Black Myth might have had a tough time beating out Astro Bot or Metaphor at The Game Awards, it’s nice to see it’s found a podium.

Black Myth: Wukong didn’t just win Game of the Year at the Steam Awards 2024, though. As pointed out by the official Twitter page for the game, it also picked up the award for “Best Game You Suck At” against Sparking Zero and Tekken 8, as well as beating Final Fantasy 16 and Mouthwashing for “Outstanding Story-Rich Game Award”.
