The 2009 Modern Warfare 2 is reportedly coming to Xbox Game Pass in either March or April 2025.

The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is reportedly coming to Xbox Game Pass. The classic shooter is expected to reach Microsoft’s subscription service in either late winter or early spring, further bolstering the Xbox Game Pass Call of Duty catalog.
Microsoft completed its $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition in October 2023. In July of the following year, Xbox Game Pass received its first Call of Duty title, the 2023 Modern Warfare 3. Black Ops 6 followed suit three months later, becoming the first entry in the long-running franchise to have a day-one release on the popular subscription service.
Another series installment is now said to be coming to Microsoft’s content catalog, with XboxEra reporting that Modern Warfare 2 will soon join Xbox Game Pass, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. This is the original Modern Warfare 2 from 2009, not to be confused with the 2022 game of the same name. The classic shooter will supposedly become available to Microsoft’s subscribers in either March or April 2025. Insider Gaming has independently corroborated XboxEra’s report, citing its own sources.
Modern Warfare 2 Xbox Game Pass Version Might Not Be Content-Complete
Neither source offered any details regarding the actual contents of the supposed Xbox Game Pass version of the game. Activision’s Canadian subsidiary Beenox has already remastered the original Modern Warfare 2 campaign for the eponymous 2022 reboot, but the 2009 shooter’s multiplayer wasn’t included in the newer title. The Steam version of the first MW2 game had its servers taken offline in July 2023, following malware threat reports. Activision hasn’t reactivated them since then, and it’s unclear whether the publisher has any intentions of doing so. Therefore, even if the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 is indeed coming to Xbox Game Pass, it remains to be seen whether its subscription service version will be content-complete.
Activision typically announces new Call of Duty titles in April or May. Modern Warfare 2 could hence reach Xbox Game Pass around the time that the 2025 Call of Duty game is revealed, raising the possibility of both events happening at the same time.
If Microsoft is still deciding between a March and April 2025 release for the Modern Warfare 2 XGP version, March seems more likely—especially since April is presently looking much more packed. South of Midnight and Clais Obscur: Expedition 33 are both set for day-one releases on the service in April, along with Commandos: Origins. In contrast, Xbox Game Pass currently has only one confirmed day-one title for March 2025: Rebellion’s survival game Atomfall.
