GOG has sent out a survey to see what its user base would want from a subscription service.

GOG is circulating a survey amongst its users, asking what they want to see from the platform. More specifically, the survey has a heavy focus on subscription services, suggesting that one is being considered for GOG.
While we can’t see how everyone has responded privately, the public feedback from fans appears to be largely against the move. Many see it as antithetical to GOG’s DRM-free business model, which focuses on game ownership at a time when subscription services and digital game sales mean we own very little.
GOG Survey Brings Up The Possibility Of A Subscription Service
The survey was discussed on Reddit earlier today and was later shared by ResetEra user gagewood if you want to complete it yourself. It starts by asking the basics, like your gaming habits, and then moves on to ask about which other subscription services you are currently paying for. After this, it asks some more specific questions:
- How interested would you be in supporting GOG’s mission beyond purchasing games?
- How interested would you be in supporting GOG’s mission if it were tied to a membership?
Then, we’re asked about what perks we would want in return for being “a valuable member of the GOG’s community”. These are largely cosmetic, like additional profile customization, but also having your name shouted out in an official capacity. There’s also a section on what you’d want from membership.
Luckily for detractors, there’s a part at the end that lets you make your thoughts known loud and clear. Here, you’re asked to rank statements on a scale of strongly disagree to strongly agree. One of the statements is: “I believe that introducing a membership model would detract from my overall experience and perception of GOG”.
Judging from the response on Reddit, many people will be selecting strongly agree to that.
“The reason I support GoG is because what I pay becomes a product that it’s not tied to the whims of the suits,” says user Neuromante. “A subscription model is exactly the opposite of that.”
“No. A subscription model is either a sign of desperation or greed.” says Gogglesed.
Of course, this is all hypothetical right now and could just be here to gauge interest. GOG hasn’t announced any kind of subscription service, so it’s unclear if there’s one in the works. For now, you simply buy your games, and then get to play them both online and offline.
