Magic: The Gathering Teases April Fools Secret Lair, And Fans Think It’s Marvel

Games Gaming News

Wizards of the Coast has announced a redacted Secret Lair for April Fools Day.

Wizards of the Coast has made a habit of Magic: The Gathering April Fools announcements in recent years. We’ve seen “left-handed cards” where the card’s mana costs and text have swapped positions, and let’s not forget last year’s comic sans-fuelled Superdrop, wHeRe CaRdS hAd TeXt LiKe tHiS.

This year’s April Fools has brought us a Secret Lair announcement, but with the majority of the announcement’s text blacked out like a redacted espionage document. As you can imagine, fans are already hard at work investigating the announcement in order to determine just what’s being announced.

Mysterious Announcement

Firstly, the name of the Secret Lair is structured like a crossover. This is evidenced by the redacted words having character counts of 1, 8 and 9. This evidence itself is contentious because the announcement title appears to have a different character count than the body of the text. That being said, Secret Lair x Marvel‘s (8) and then a nine-character word is currently the leading prediction among fans. Daredevil (9) is a potential answer, given that Daredevil: Born Again is currently airing.

There’s also the possibility of Deadpool (9) since the character fits the comedic theme of April Fools. There’s always the chance that the number of blanked characters isn’t intentional, but given that the one character word is clearly an ‘X’, this seems unlikely. Given the nature of the announcement, the point may be to mislead internet detectives only to turn around and announce something unexpected.

There are various other theories put forward in a Reddit thread by Trifas, such as the Secret Lair being based on the SCP Foundation. One user inspected the page’s source to uncover its secrets but was only met with a terse warning: “no peeking.” Atreides-42 speculates that the Secret Lair booster is completely secret as a social experiment by Wizards of the Coast to see how many people will buy a fully blind booster pack. The probable answer is, unfortunately, a lot of people.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out as April Fools is imminent.
