The dedicated Mario Kart World Direct on April 17, 2025 included a showcase of six new items that players will be able to use to fight for first place while racing across various game modes. Mario Kart World is set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, and players now have a better idea of the latest additions coming to the newest release in the Mario Kart franchise.

Mario Kart World will feature multiple changes to the iconic racing series, with the inclusion of a first-ever Knockout Mode and Freeroam Mode, new playable characters like the Cow from Moo Moo Meadows, and several new gameplay mechanics that will reshape the way players strategize on the racetrack. With the latest Mario Kart World Direct, players now know some of the new items that will be coming with the highly-anticipated game.

During one of the Mario Kart World Direct segments, Nintendo confirmed six new items that players will be able to collect from ?-Blocks while racing in Grand Prix and Knockout Mode. Players are likely familiar with the items in Mario Kart that can be used to attack other racers, speed ahead in the rankings, and defend against enemy shells. Some of the most classic items from the Mario Kart franchise are green and red shells, banana peels, lightning, Bullet Bills, and the dreaded blue shell. While those items will be returning in Mario Kart World, brand-new items including a Coin Shell, Ice Flower, Hammer, and Kamek will also be on the way. Classic items like the Mega Mushroom from Mario Kart Wii and Feather from Super Mario Kart will also be returning to the racing modes.

6 New Items in Mario Kart World

  • Coin Shell
  • Ice Flower
  • Hammer
  • Mega Mushroom
  • Feather
  • Kamek

Each of the six new items confirmed for Mario Kart World will give players special abilities to try and earn their way to victory. The Coin Shell releases a trail of coins when released, giving everyone a chance to pickup more coins to increase their maximum speed. The Ice Flower and Hammer can be used to stun fellow racers, by leaving them in a frosty spin-out or blocking their drift path, respectively. The Mega Mushroom will grow both the player and their vehicle to be able to crush the competition, while the Feather can be used to jump onto grind rails or to avoid shells and obstacles. Kamek, once summoned, will transform the racers in unexpected ways, adding chaos to the gameplay of Mario Kart World.

The Mario Kart video games are among the most beloved of the racing genre, and audiences are already gearing up for the newest changes coming to Mario Kart World. Players can experience all the new courses, characters, and items in Mario Kart World exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 beginning June 5.
