Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are getting Switch 2 upgrades on June 5.

Thursday, June 5 will be an exciting day for fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise, as that’s the day that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are getting their Switch 2 updates as well as when the GameCube version of Wind Waker is being added to the Nintendo Classics lineup. Alongside Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda has been one of Nintendo‘s core franchises since the days of the NES. Nearly every main series installment has earned near-universal critical acclaim, with Ocarina of Time standing out as the highest-rated video game ever made.
The Zelda name carries a lot of weight, and so it’s no surprise that Nintendo has consistently released new entries in the series. Every single major Nintendo console and handheld from the NES to the Switch has featured at least one Zelda game, with some systems treated to more than one entry. It’s inevitable that a new main series Zelda game will one day be released for the Nintendo Switch 2, but in the meantime, early adopters of Nintendo’s next-generation home console/handheld hybrid can look forward to revisiting enhanced classics on the device.
On June 5, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will see the release of their special Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. These upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom include better performance and resolution, plus special new features when paired with the Nintendo app. Using the app, Zelda fans can utilize maps for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom as well as unlock achievements. These new features give those that have already played through Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom reason to do so again when the Switch 2 launches on June 5.
Why Zelda Fans Should Be Excited for June 5
- Switch 2 upgrades for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
- The Wind Waker added to the Nintendo Classics library
- Soulcalibur 2 featuring Link added to the Nintendo Classics library
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom‘s Switch 2 Editions will be available for standalone purchase for $69.99. Those that already own the Switch 1 versions of the game can upgrade for $9.99. Better yet, anyone with a Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription can enjoy the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom upgrades at no additional charge. Besides this perk, there is another big reason Zelda fans may want to sign up for Switch Online’s Expansion Pack tier once they have a Switch 2.
The same day that the Switch 2 upgrades for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are available, Nintendo is adding a trio of GameCube games to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier as part of the Nintendo Classics catalog. These games, available only to Switch 2 gamers, are F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Wind Waker is considered one of the best 3D Zelda games by many, and so being able to play through it in its entirety is a big selling point for Switch Online’s Expansion Pack on Switch 2. It’s also worth pointing out that Link is a playable character in Soulcalibur 2.
While a brand-new Zelda will be even more exciting, there’s no denying that fans of the franchise have a lot to be excited about come June 5. Time will tell if the Zelda Switch 2 upgrades live up to expectations, but at the very least, fans will get to relive Wind Waker and Link’s appearance in Soulcalibur 2.
