Nintendo finally unveils the Switch 2 console confirming features like magnetic Joy-Cons and an optical sensor.

Nintendo finally reveals its next console as the Switch 2, showcasing the hardware’s new features and design, while teasing a new Mario Kart and offering a date for the accompanying Direct. The Nintendo Switch 2 has been one of the worst kept secrets at the Japanese company following countless leaks and rumors over the past month.
Recently, controversy struck at CES 2025 as the company Genki caused waves with what it called a prototype version of the Switch 2 console. The mockup featured specific details like magnetic style Joy-Cons and an optical sensor which captivated fans and was detailed enough to attract the attention of Nintendo’s lawyers, who reportedly had a conversation with the company at the show. After a lengthy wait, Nintendo has finally pulled the curtain back on it’s next big console.
Taking to social media, Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2, releasing a new trailer and website where fans could learn more information. The trailer confirmed numerous Switch 2 leaks including the optical sensor and magnetic Joy-Cons, which appear to snap into place instead of needing to be slid along a rail. Fans looking for more information will have to wait a bit longer as a dedicated Nintendo Direct stream for the Switch 2 is taking place on April 2, 2025. The console is set for a general 2025 launch, and Nintendo is taking the system on the road where fans can go hands on with the new console, similar to the original Nintendo Switch Tour in 2016.
