Upcoming Xbox Game Reportedly Releasing on PS5 Day One

Next Doom game may release on PS5 alongside Xbox, contrary to earlier rumors of Xbox exclusivity.

According to reports from several insiders, the next Doom game will reportedly release on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox consoles and PC. An earlier report alleged that the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase will reveal the next entry in the Doom series, and as it appears, it could be launching on more platforms than anticipated.

The last entry in the franchise, Doom Eternal, released four years ago to widespread critical acclaim. Developer id Software has since been hard at work supporting Eternal with the Ancient Gods DLCs, while also developing the next entry in the series. Rumors surrounding the reveal of the next Doom title have been gaining traction lately, with a recent report claiming that it could be unveiled at Xbox’s imminent Showcase in June, as well as potential details about its official title.

After Microsoft’s 2021 acquisition of Zenimax (the parent company of id Software), many expected the next Doom game to be an Xbox and PC exclusive. However, multiple credible insiders have reported that the next Doom title, possibly dubbed Doom: The Dark Ages, will apparently be a multiplatform release on day one, launching on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Reputable leaker NateTheHate first revealed on Twitter that Doom: The Dark Ages will be “revealed as a multiplatform release” and that it’s “coming to PlayStation 5.”

Doom: The Dark Ages Could Be the Next Step in Xbox’s Multiplatform Strategy

The rumor was further corroborated by Microsoft insider Jez Corden of Windows Central, who reported that he’d also heard Doom: The Dark Ages is indeed slated for a PlayStation release. If true, then this could be a significant juncture in Xbox’s multiplatform pivot, as it would be the first post-acquisition Zenimax game to launch day and date on PlayStation and Xbox. The precedence for Doom staying multiplatform due to it being a legacy IP still exists, but with Xbox finding success with its initial batch of four multiplatform games earlier this year, it appears the brand may eventually relinquish exclusivity entirely.

Beyond Doom: The Dark Ages, Corden also reckoned that Microsoft could be gearing up to elucidate its multiplatform strategy further during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9. There have been several rumors about more Xbox titles making the jump to PS5, including the recently released Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, with there reportedly being “no red line” for the franchises crossing over. That means established, long-running Xbox IPs like HaloGears, and Forza could very well be seen on the PlayStation Store sometime in the future, and Doom: The Dark Ages launching day one on PS5 may be the first proper step towards that.
