Running Borderlands 4 on PC will require an 8-core processor and a graphics card with at least 8 to 12 GB of video memory, according to the game’s system requirements. However, given that less than half of Steam‘s user base uses an 8-core CPU, the steep requirements for Borderlands 4 will leave out some potential players unless they upgrade.
As the next entry in Gearbox‘s hit looter-shooter franchise, Borderlands 4 will take Vault Hunters to a new planet named Kairos, which is ruled by the tyrannical Timekeeper. Like its predecessors, Borderlands 4 supports both solo play and online co-op action, though the game is designed with up to four players in mind. Given Borderlands 4‘s emphasis on RPG elements compared to before, some quality-of-life changes to the game’s Skill Tree system will allow players to max out points for a specific trait or perk for their Vault Hunters to utilize. While Borderlands 4 will launch on multiple platforms on September 12, the Switch 2 port will arrive at a later date.
However, PC players looking to dive into Borderlands 4 must ensure their gaming rigs are up to the task. As reported by PC Guide, the minimum specs for Borderlands 4 require an 8-core CPU paired with a GPU that has at least 8GB of video memory. While older CPUs like the Intel Core i7-9700 and the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X fulfill this requirement, the recommended specifications are steeper to meet. The CPU requirement jumps to an Intel Core i7-12700 or an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, while graphics cards like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT that have at least 12GB of VRAM will be needed to run Gearbox’s upcoming Unreal Engine 5 title. Given that approximately 50.42% of Steam users still have a CPU with six or fewer cores, this means just over half of Valve’s user base can’t run Borderlands 4 without making upgrades.

The steep requirements to run Borderlands 4 on PC are due to the game’s use of both Unreal Engine 5 and elements like ray tracing, both of which are graphically demanding on any system. Borderlands 4 also requires at least 32GB of RAM and 100GB of available storage space on an SSD. By comparison, Borderlands 3‘s recommended specs include an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 CPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU.
With an emphasis on exploration and RPG elements, Borderlands 4 is different from its predecessors. It remains to be seen how optimized the PC version of Gearbox’s upcoming title will be.
