Video Ghastlies blends classic horror elements with mind-bending mechanics and surreal settings for a unique gaming experience.

Developer Katanalevy and publisher Oro Interactive have released the first official trailer for Video Ghastlies, a survival horror game that sees players traveling through the iconic eras of horror cinema. Slated to release exclusively for PC via Steam, interested fans can now get a closer look at the mind-bending mechanics and surreal setting of Video Ghastlies.
The survival horror genre has evolved in a number of ways since it was first established with 1989s Sweet Home and later popularized by the Resident Evil game franchise in the 1990s. Looking to bring the familiar elements of these classics with an interesting twist, Video Ghastlies draws inspiration not only from retro video games but also from old-school movies.
As detailed on its Steam store page, Video Ghastlies will have players taking on the role of a character whose brother has gone missing after the latter became obsessed with a new VHS format. Players will have to follow a trail of VHS tapes, each of which has the ability to open a door to an alternate world where classic horror movies come to life. Universes inspired by Silent Era Cinema, Italian Giallo films, 80s Body Horror, Found Footage, and more familiar tropes will hold the secrets of the brother’s disappearance and the truth behind the government’s efforts to ban the titular “Video Ghastlies.” Blending the mechanics of psychological horror video games with the storytelling and environments of retro horror cinema, Video Ghastlies places players into a nightmarish journey where some things were never meant to be put to film.
Video Ghastlies Puts an Interesting Spin on the Horror Genre
In Video Ghastlies, players will collect and utilize VHS tapes to progress through the story and unlock new cinematic worlds filled with danger. After inserting a new VHS into the VCR, players will be transported to worlds representing classic horror cinema eras. The protagonist’s apartment will act as a “safe haven” hub area and is where players can piece together the various clues they have collected and prepare for the horrors ahead. Players can scavenge for unique weapons and tools in each of the film worlds while facing challenging puzzles, disturbing enemies, and relentless bosses. Video Ghastlies looks to join a growing lineup of horror games inspired by retro movies when it launches for PC.
Audiences have a number of exciting horror games to look forward to, ranging from AAA releases like Silent Hill f to independent offerings like Video Ghastlies. Players can stay tuned for more updates on Video Ghatslies and other indie and AAA horror video game announcements.
