World of Warcraft is reviving the Greedy Emissary Diablo event with the addition of dark lore.

World of Warcraft is bringing back the Greedy Emissary Diablo event, but this time, there’s some actual lore behind it, involving a particularly dark timeline of Azeroth. This revamped World of Warcraft x Diablo event will return to the game as one of the post-launch features of Patch 11.1.7.
Recently, World of Warcraft revealed Patch 11.1.7, Legacy of Arathor. The next content update introduces a renewed World of Warcraft questing and leveling experience called Lorewalking, a new story chapter set in the Arathi Highlands, and additional UI and accessibility options, as well as the return of the Greedy Emissary Diablo crossover.
However, this collaboration event is bringing more than just new rewards in this next run. While exploring the Patch 11.1.7 Public Test Realm, WoW content creator MrGM discovered Baranar, a new Hellhunter NPC associated with the event. MrGM shared Baranar’s dialogue on Twitter, where the Hellhunter explains he is from an alternative timeline of Azeroth where things went poorly: hellfire and plague consumed the land, and the forces of the Light forsook the denizens of the world in the name of justice. Fandral Staghelm became a hero by harnessing the power of hellfire, while Malfurion was ostensibly fused with a demon of disease to become Malfisto, a monster who rotted Nordrassil and the forests of Mount Hyjal from within.
World of Warcraft x Diablo Event Lore Explained
While World of Warcraft has tons of alternate timelines, many of which are rather dark, this one is obviously inspired by Diablo. The world of Sanctuary is a battleground between the forces of Heaven and Hell, and humans are often caught in their crossfire. The Light forsaking the Hellhunters’ world mimics the mindset of the Angels of Sanctuary, and the demon Malfisto is a reference to Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred of Diablo 4 infamy. Meanwhile, Staghelm finds a more heroic spin on his transformation into a Druid of the Flame than his heel turn in the main World of Warcraft timeline.
The returning Greedy Emissary event also brings with it several new rewards, including an Inarius recolor of Tyrael’s Charger, and additional tints of the revamped Tier 2 sets from WoW’s 20th anniversary. It is unclear exactly how these rewards will be earned at the moment, but fans can expect to learn more in the coming weeks.
There is currently no official start date for the event, though the PTR currently lists it as running for the entirety of July. World of Warcraft Patch 11.1.7 is likewise suspected to arrive on or around June 17, so while these dates could change before their official announcement, it sounds like there will be plenty of activities for WoW players to enjoy this summer.
