Doom: The Dark Ages Trailer Shows off Story and Gameplay

Doom The Dark Ages’ new trailer gives a preview of the player’s role as the Slayer, fighting to save humanity from hellish creatures.

Developer id Software has shared a 3-minute trailer showing off Doom: The Dark Ages‘ story and gameplay, giving players a preview of what their role as the Slayer will be in the upcoming prequel. The new trailer also presents Doom: The Dark Ages’ various enemies along with a brief demonstration of its frenetic gameplay ahead of its release on 15 May 2025.

Since its very appearance in the industry, Doom has been a synonym for chaos and fun. The very first title revolutionized shooters, establishing the foundations of what an FPS should be, and Doom’s formula still holds up today. Considered one of the most influential games ever, Doom has spanned several different entries, introducing some changes over the years, though always maintaining its original frenetic approach to gameplay. Now, the upcoming new installment in the franchise is around the corner, bringing an interesting spin to the formula by swapping the classic sci-fi setting for a dark, medieval world, and players have just been treated to a new trailer for the game.

Although players have already had a preview of Doom: The Dark Ages, id Software has now shown off more details about its story and gameplay. True to Doom’s style, the trailer showcases chaotic gameplay, with the player battling different waves of daemons and creatures across different medieval scenarios. Players will take on the role of the Slayer, having to fight creatures coming straight from hell that are trying to wipe out the human race. Some enemies resemble creatures already seen in previous games, though players will also face off against new demons and threats.

As presented in the trailer, the story follows a war where the ruler of Hell has launched a wave of daemons to try to control and subjugate Earth, so humans released the iconic Doom Slayer, now armored in heavy, ancient-looking gear and wielding brutal medieval weapons, with the game’s story serving as the origin of the Slayer and the creation of the legend. Players will face enemies across different locations such as ruined castles, dark forests, ancient hellscapes, and more.

The game will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and players can preorder it to receive the Void Doom Slayer Skin at launch. Those eager to fight Doom: The Dark Ages‘ enemies can also get the Premium Edition, which includes up to 2-Day Advanced Access to the game, the campaign DLC, the Digital Artbook and Soundtrack, and the Divinity Skin Pack.
