During a new livestream event, Bungie detailed the new Dark Matter abilities that players will be able to use while exploring Kepler in The Edge of Fate expansion for Destiny 2. Formerly part of the mysterious Codename Frontiers phase of Destiny 2, the Edge of Fate marks the start of a new evolution of the popular and long-running online shooter.
It’s clear that Bungie is planning massive changes to the core Destiny 2 experience when The Edge of Fate launches. The studio has continued to slowly reveal new features and major changes such as the new Armor 3.0 system in Destiny 2, which adds set bonuses and a tier system for stronger gear. Event Home launched back in May and Bungie is also changing the Director screen, swapping it out in favor of the Portal menu as a sort of content browser. However, that’s not all as Bungie also confirmed new Dark Matter abilities while exploring Kepler.
In the latest developer insights trailer, Bungie dives deeper into the previously detailed destination abilities inside of Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate. While on Kepler, players will gain new abilities empowered by the Dark Matter on the planetoid. Matterspark lets the player turn into an arc ball, similar to Samus Aran’s Morph Ball technique from the Metroid franchise. The ViDoc also confirmed two others with the Mattermorph and Relocator, which allows players to utilize objects in the environment, while the other acts as a sort of teleport. Better yet, these abilities can be upgraded with new perks.
Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate Adds New Dark Matter Abilities
While traversal and exploration are at the forefront of these new Destiny 2 abilities, especially when exploring the interconnected zones of Kepler, it’s not all they can do. Bungie showed off how these Dark Matter abilities can be used in combat, with the Matterspark exploding into a damaging arc blast, while Mattermorph can set up new pathways or suspend enemies. All in all, Bungie is eager to see the various combinations players come up with, even teasing that some of these powers pair well with certain exotic perks and aspects to further push buildcrafting.

With many places to explore using these Dark Matter abilities, players will have plenty of rewards to earn as well. With any new expansion, exotic armor and weapons are a big draw for many players and The Edge of Fate will have its fair share. During the livestream, Bungie went into more detail on the three new exotic armor pieces inside of Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. Eunoia improves the Warlock’s Hellion ability, Moirai makes the Threaded Spike more deadly for Hunters, and Melas Panoplia gives Titans the ability to recall their Throwing Hammer like Thor.
